A firm favorite with our customers! These are large solid structures, as can be seen from the photographs, however you may require a much smaller braai, depending naturally on your own desired environmental effect, and your budget. Each project is tailored to what you want, so think creatively, tell us what you want and we will make it happen for you.
Construction starts with preparing the foundation, usually steel reinforced concrete. After 2days curing time, the building commences in stages, using double rows of brickforced ROK clay bricks, concrete lintels & steel rods, to complete the basic structure. Thereafter, cement-cladding is applied, imprinted with our fake-rock texture pads & carved to the desired look. The fire-box is then plastered out with 10mm of smooth plaster to receive the firebrick lining, which is applied after the plaster has thoroughly dried (3 – 4 days usually).
The use of properly installed & cured firebricks is recommended by Dela Casa to complete the visually impressive structure, but you are free to decide on whether to take this option. We suggest that no fire be made on the firebox surface for at least 5 days after completion, even if firebricks are used. This is purely a precaution to ensure sufficient drying time of the cement & thereby to reduce the risk of cracking. An important point to mention is that firebricks do NOT provide insullation against heat, and in fact transmit heat VERY effectively through them. Further information as to the properties of firebricks can be obtained from Cape Refractory Industries at (021) 982 7484 (No website available).
Firebricks are notoriously expensive, but ensure a safe and almost indestructible fire-making area.
